What Happens When a Person is Baptized?
What does it mean to be baptized? Why is it essential?
And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

What happens during baptism?
What does it mean to be baptized? Why is it essential?
1 Corinthians 6.11 provides us with the explanation by highlighting three significant transformations that occur: we are washed, sanctified, and justified.
The Washing: Regeneration and Renewal
The act of baptism begins with the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, Titus 3.5. When we meet God in the water, the Spirit liberates us from spiritual death, cleanses us from our sins, and breathes new life into us, making us spiritually alive and responsive to God. This pivotal moment in one's life is further expounded in Colossians 2.13, Ephesians 2.4-5, and Romans 6.3-4, all bearing witness to the life-giving work of the Spirit during baptism.
Sanctification: The Shift in Position
During our baptism, we are transferred from Satan’s kingdom, the realm of darkness, into God’s kingdom, the domain of light, Colossians 1.13. Involved in this change of location is a complete alteration of our spiritual identity and allegiance. Galatians 4.5-7 and Ephesians 1.5 describe this transition as an adoption, where a person becomes a part of the divine family of God.
Justification: The Legal Acquittal
When we are baptized, we are justified. Justification is a legal term that describes our change in status. Through baptism, we are declared “not guilty” of our sins, Colossians 2.13-14. It's as if we stood in a heavenly court, with God as the Judge, and despite our guilt, God declares us innocent because of the work of Jesus Christ. This justification, therefore, changes our legal standing before God, and grants us access to the benefits of His Kingdom.
Conclusion
Again, baptism is absolutely essential to your salvation. You will not be saved without it because it cleanses you from sin, integrates you into the family of God, and absolves you from past wrongs.
If you've been baptized, never forget its significance. Your washing should remind you always to seek spiritual cleanliness. Your sanctification helps you realize you are part of God's divine family and His kingdom. And let your justification remind you of God's unending mercy, His forgiveness, and the new status you have in Him.
If you've not been baptized into Christ, we'd love to help you begin your relationship with Him.
